In today’s world, there’s hundreds of new acronyms to keep up with. One incredibly important one is DEI. But what does that mean, and how does it show up every day?
Defining DEI
DEI stands for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
Diversity – What does it mean, Misconceptions, and More.
Many people define Diversity as the color of your skin; however, it is so much more than that. In addition to race, diversity considers one’s sexual orientation, gender identification, religious beliefs, educational background, geographic background, and more. Diversity can be defined many ways, but it’s about highlighting, acknowledging, and respecting everyone’s differences, and how they make you unique.
Equity – The Meaning, The Importance, and Relevance today.
Equity is about everyone having a seat at the table. A common phrase that used to be used was “Everyone is the same on the inside”, and while the thought behind the phrase is received, it is just not accurate. As discussed, Diversity is about celebrating everyone’s differences. Equity is about giving everyone an equal opportunity, because of their differences. Multiple perspectives coming together is what brings out the most creative and innovative ideas and strategies. To accurately engage in everyone’s perspective, everyone needs a seat at the table.
Inclusion – How to be Inclusive, the Benefits of Inclusion, and the Future.
Inclusion is all about creating and cultivating a sense of belonging for all. Everyone brings a different culture, way of life, and outlook on things, therefore having the same environment for everyone is not effective. Learning, respecting, and understanding everyone’s preferences, backgrounds, and intentions will make everyone feel valued and comfortable being their authentic selves, which in turn will create a positive, flowing environment.
Creating the space, placing value, and educating yourself and those around you are the best ways to start your commitment to creating an equitable environment for all. For more information on the meaning of diversity, or inquiries for DEI training, reach out to us at DT@diverse-talent.com
